A phase-field model of stress effect on grain boundary migration

چکیده
We developed a phase-field model to study the stress-driven grain boundary migration in elastically inhomogeneous polycrystalline materials with arbitrary elastic inhomogeneity and anisotropy. The dependence of elastic stiffness tensor on grain orientation is taken into account, and the elastic equilibrium equation is solved using the Fourier spectral iterative-perturbation method. We studied the migration of planar and curved grain boundaries under an applied stress. The relation between grain boundary migration velocity and driving force is found to be linear in the steady-state regime. Our study shows that the stress distribution depends on the relative misorientation between the grains and the nature of the applied load. As a consequence, the mechanism of grain boundary migration is different when the load is applied parallel or perpendicular to a grain boundary. The bulk mechanical driving force for grain boundary migration is provided by the difference in the level of stress in the adjoining grains which arise due to difference in elastic moduli. We further show that under certain conditions an applied stress may act as a precursor to abnormal grain growth. (Some figures in this article are in colour only in the electronic version)

Finite Element Modeling of Strain Rate and Grain Size Dependency in Nanocrystalline Materials
Nanocrystalline materials show a higher strain-rate sensitivity in contrast to the conventional coarse-grained materials and a different grain size dependency. To explain these phenomenon, a finite element model is constructed that considers both grain interior and grain boundary deformation of nanocrystalline materials. The model consist of several crystalline cores with different orientations...
متن کاملAnalysis of the elastic strain energy driving force for grain boundary migration using phase field simulation
We investigate elastic energy-driven grain boundary migration in a strained copper bicrystal using an atomistically informed phase field model. In a bicrystal experiencing a uniform strain, the softer grain has a lower energy density and grows at the expense of the harder grain. In a bicrystal experiencing heterogeneous strain, the softer grain has a higher energy density, yet it still grows. O...

The microstructure of dual phase steels can be considered as a matrix of ferrite phase reinforced by martensite particles. Recent measurements show that the mechanical properties of the ferrite phase are changed with the distance from the martensite grains. In this paper, a new method has been proposed to consider this phenomenon in finite element modeling of dual phase steels microstructure. I...

The analytical expressions for thermoelastic damping and frequency ...
متن کاملA Phase-Field Simulation Study of Irregular Grain Boundary Migration during Recrystallization
We present simulation results based on a phase-field model that describes the migration of recrystallization boundaries into spatially varying deformation energy fields. Energy fields with 2-dimensional variations representing 2 sets of dislocation boundaries lying at equal, but opposite, angles to the moving boundary are considered. The simulations show that the shape and overall migration rat...
